What is it
A Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) is a hole in the wall, or septum, between the lower chambers of the heart. VSD closure is a procedure to close this hole, helping restore normal blood flow and reduce strain on the heart and lungs.
Why it is done
A VSD allows blood to flow from the left ventricle to the right ventricle, increasing the workload on the heart and lungs. Closing the defect can improve heart function and oxygen delivery and reduce the risk of complications.
Who needs it
A moderate to large VSD
Poor growth or feeding difficulties in infants
Shortness of breath
Frequent respiratory infections
Fatigue or decreased exercise tolerance
Signs of heart failure
Types and options
Perimembranous VSD - the most common, located near the heart valves
Muscular VSD - in the muscular part of the septum
Outlet (supracristal) VSD - near the outflow tract of the heart
Catheter-based closure: a small incision in the groin, no open-heart surgery, shorter recovery.
Surgical closure: the hole is closed with a patch, and may be recommended for very large defects or when other heart problems need treating at the same time.
Tests before treatment
Imaging and medical evaluation are used to assess the defect, heart function and the position of the closure device. For device closure, imaging is performed during and after the procedure to confirm the device is correctly placed and there is no leak.
How it is done
The hole is closed using either a patch or a closure device. In surgical closure, a patch is sewn over the hole.
Recovery
One to two days in hospital, usually for device closure. Children may return to activities within about one to two weeks, depending on their recovery and their doctor's advice. Regular check-ups are required to monitor heart health and confirm successful closure.
Benefits and outcomes
Improves heart function - normal blood flow lets the heart work more efficiently
Better oxygen delivery - reduces extra blood flow to the lungs
Promotes growth and development - children can grow, play and thrive with more energy
Prevents complications - may lower the risk of heart failure, lung problems and infections
Better quality of life - can help children and adults live a healthier, more active life
Risks and complications
Bleeding or infection at the catheter or incision site
Irregular heart rhythm
Device movement
Residual leak around the device, which may need follow-up
Allergic reaction to contrast or medications
These risks are generally rare.
Preparing to travel
Medical evaluation is performed
Appropriate imaging is carried out
Anaesthesia is given during the procedure
You are prepared for either catheter-based or surgical closure, depending on the defect and the treatment plan
How it is done
-
1
Preparation
You will receive anaesthesia so you are comfortable and pain-free.
-
2
Access
A small tube, a catheter, is inserted into a vein in the groin and guided toward the heart.
-
3
Crossing the VSD
The catheter is guided across the VSD into the left ventricle.
-
4
Device delivery
The closure device is advanced through the catheter and positioned across the hole.
-
5
Device released
The device is released and seals the hole. Blood flow returns toward normal.
-
6
Final check
Imaging is performed to make sure the device is in the right place and there is no leak.
