What is it
Robotic cardiac surgery uses advanced robotic technology and tiny incisions to perform complex heart procedures with greater precision, flexibility and control. It offers the benefits of minimally invasive surgery while aiming to deliver outcomes comparable to traditional open-heart surgery.
Why it is done
It can be used for selected heart conditions where minimally invasive robotic surgery may provide an alternative to traditional open-heart surgery.
Who needs it
Mitral valve disease
Coronary artery disease requiring bypass surgery
Atrial fibrillation
Septal defects
Certain heart tumours and other conditions
The heart team decides whether robotic surgery is appropriate, based on your condition and anatomy.
Types and options
Mitral valve repair or replacement - treats leaking or narrowed mitral valves
Coronary artery bypass (CABG) - creates new pathways around blocked arteries
Atrial fibrillation surgery - targets the areas causing irregular heart rhythm
Septal defect repair - closes holes in the heart
Heart tumour removal - removes certain tumours safely and precisely

Overall surgical risk
The final approach is selected according to your individual condition.
How it is done
The surgeon controls specialised robotic instruments from a console. High-definition 3D vision and flexible instruments allow precise movements through small incisions.
Recovery
Most patients may go home within two to four days. Many can gradually return to normal activities within about two to four weeks, depending on the procedure and individual recovery. Smaller incisions may mean less pain, less blood loss, less scarring and a faster recovery. Follow-up with the heart team is required to monitor recovery and long-term results.
Benefits and outcomes
Greater precision - 3D high-definition vision and wristed instruments allow precise movements
Smaller incisions - tiny incisions can mean less pain and minimal scarring
Less pain and blood loss - less trauma to the body
Faster recovery - many patients return to normal activities sooner
Proven outcomes - robotic surgery can give excellent short and long-term results in appropriately selected patients
Risks and complications
Bleeding
Infection
Anaesthesia-related complications
Heart rhythm problems
Blood clots
Injury to surrounding structures
A need to convert to traditional surgery in certain situations
Your heart team will assess your individual risks and determine the safest surgical approach.

How it is done
-
1
Preparation
You will receive anaesthesia so you are comfortable and pain-free during surgery.
-
2
Small incisions
Several tiny incisions are made between the ribs to insert the camera and the robotic instruments.
-
3
Surgeon at the console
The surgeon sits at a console near the operating table and controls the instruments with precision.
-
4
The procedure
The robotic instruments move with a greater range of motion, allowing the surgeon to work precisely.
-
5
Closure
The instruments are removed and the small incisions are closed with sutures.
